This project is one of the recipients of the prestigious Gerbode Foundation Theatre Commission Award. Smiley is a do it all theatre maker and as the Program Director for Bay View Opera House has revitalized their audiences and programming the past few years. Our Performance Pass is about offering the most exciting array of artists and performances, while making it accessible and welcoming to all, true to our mission. We discussed it as a mixture of magical realism, musical theatre and children’s theatre.This year I’m doing The Unravelling by UK playwright Fin Kennedy. Magik Theatre

When the Eisteddfod begins, it starts with an opening ceremony held by the Druids. These circles of stone are known as Gorsedd circles and are erected specifically for the Eisteddfod. Within these stone circles the Druids will call to the four quarters, a bouquet of flowers representing the land of Wales is presented to the arch-Druid in a ritual known as the “Blodeuged” (the gifting of flowers). A horn of plenty is then also presented, followed by a flower dance. The San Francisco Symphony’s February programming lineup features four Orchestral Series programs led by Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and guest conductors Paavo Järvi and Robin Ticciati. A young child awakens Christmas morning to discover a Velveteen Rabbit among their gifts. Soon becoming the Child’s new favorite toy, the Rabbit’s appearance becomes worn and shabby from play, and a wonderful change begins to happen. The Sandrell Rivers Theater is a brand new, state-of-the-art theater serving the city of Miami and all of Miami-Dade County & South Florida. These otherworldly landscapes are not mere settings but active elements that imbue the narrative with allure and complexity. Central to magical realism is the juxtaposition of the fantastical with the realistic so that the former is accepted as a natural part of the world’s fabric. This renders the surreal components unremarkable to the characters within the play, even if their coexistence would be logically infeasible in a purely realistic setting. I grew up in North Wales and speak Welsh as my first language. Well, an Eisteddfod is a cultural festival that celebrates the arts. Poetry and music take centre stage at an Eisteddfod, but dance and performance are also a rather core element of it all.

In fact, I love to blend the two worlds because I believe that they co-exist rather harmoniously. The best open or public rituals I have ever attended were not dissimilar to attending an interactive performance at a theatre. There is that same atmosphere, and a desire to be swept away from the mundane into the thrall of a magical world constructed in this special, liminal space by all involved. If anything, we can imagine a theatre space or performance space exactly like a ritual circle. Since the company’s founding in 1967 by visionary John Lion, the Magic Theatre has identified and cultivated writers on the cutting edge of American theatre, serving as a vital center for the creation and performance of new American plays.
